Sitting around having a cup of coffee or glass of tea is the time we all need to breathe in and out. It can be a challenge to balance life, bills, and family. Melvina Washington is an expert medical coder, author, and mentor. I saw a post of hers pop up on my social media page, Facebook, and I thought, Wow, she has a strong voice and presence. But she posted something that is worth repeating. She said, “But what are you saying?”
When I read it, I instantly thought about myself and what I was saying. Am I saying something that encourages me? Do I frequently say something that is negative? If I say I am going to do a thing, do I do it? Or, in short, what am I saying?
I realized I have been saying a lot of things lately but haven’t had that much time to make good on many of them. Not at work, but mostly for my family. I’ve been thinking how many times I say, “Yeah, I will get to that later. “ Only I never do.
I read this short story, and I'm not sure how true it is, but I think the example was good. It said, “No one gets older and says I wish you would have spent more money on me.” Pointing to the fact that most children and families likewise wished they had spent more time with the people they loved. It was with that in mind that I stopped my long to-do list to take my children to a carnival up the street for two hours. I got a work call while I was there, but I didn’t answer it. I chose to live in the moment.
